Tectonic can mean both ‘the study of the earth's structural features’ and ‘the art of construction’. The work reflects both aspects of the word’s meaning. The written musical materials, performed with an orchestra of strings, winds, piano and percussion are quite simple, but combined together in sometimes complex and unpredictable ways and may also be transformed by electronic manipulation. The instrumental sections are performed independently - using separate conductors, allowing the blocks of musical material to slide, grate and collide with one another like tectonic plates.
The four instrumental groups are provided with a mobile score, comprising five notated textures - chord, rhythm, harmony, melody and polyphony.
Instrumental groups are coordinated by computer to perform the notated textures at a given a tempo between mm. 27and mm. 135. The metronome pulses may also accelerate or decelerate or remain constant throughout the performance of each texture.
